ABIDE BY like Abi
and Deby
Two birds named ABI and DEBY, lived
together in a well protected nest built at a vantage point, sand-witched between a fish
stall and a butcher’s shop. They laid down a set of rules in their mutual own
interests and both obeyed the rules and led a smooth life.
One day ABI had the fortune of
escaping from a pouncing lynx but unfortunate to have its wings on one side
broken and its tibiotarsus [A long bone in the leg of a bird between the femur and
the tarsometatarsus, consisting of the tibia fused with the proximal bones of
the tarsus]
severely damaged that it could no longer fly or run fast but
barely manage to move slowly. DEBY could not bear the tragedy and as their
friendship was so profound that they set out a new set of rules whereby to
ensure the safety of ABI, DEBY also would not fly or move far away, instead he
would clandestinely pick up meat bits and fish from the two nearby shops and bring and give them to ABI. This worked on well
for some time.
All of a sudden the fish stall moved
out of the place and the customers at the butcher’s shop also dwindled but
somehow DEBY managed to bring enough chicken and meat from its short sorties
but it brought some pieces and started putting them in cardboard box out of the
reach of ABI.
Once when DEBY had gone out on such
sorties ABI filled with physical feebleness, psychological frustration and
presumptive suspicion in a spur of the movement straining its only remaining
spur [a
sharp curved part on the back of a bird’s leg ] dragged itself injuring
its breast, flanks and belly defying all laws of kinematics [the branch of biomechanics about the study of
movement with reference to the amount of time taken to carry out the activity ] reached out for the box stretching and straining its ruff [A distinctive collarlike projection around the
neck, as of feathers on a bird or of fur on a mammal ] and
carried on to consume the carrion and returned to its abode.
When
DEBY arrived
he found an exhausted and bleeding ABI and was terribly upset, he went near and
enquired what happened.
ABI
in a fit of fury started abusing DEBY as to why he was hoarding food selfishly
for himself in the box. Then DEBY explained saying that he had been putting
chicken pieces infected with bird flu and poisoned meat pieces in that box so
that no creature would consume it even by mistake. As DEBY was narrating this
ABI died with its gizzard [The
second, or true, muscular stomach of birds
] spilling
out of its torn belly and blood oozing out of its beak. ABI and DEBY had a safe
and smooth life as long as they were abiding by the rules
of what they agreed upon but calamity struck when suspicion led to aberration. So always try to ABIDE BY the rules
as ABI and DEBY did initially.
